CISTI signed a Memorandum of Understanding on June 22, 2009, to become a member of DataCite, the international initiative to facilitate access to research data.

DataCite is a not-for-profit partnership of seven libraries: CISTI, the German National Library of Science and Technology, the British Library, the library of the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, the Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (France), the Technical Information Center of Denmark, and Delft University of Technology Library (Netherlands). The goal of this partnership is to improve access to research data by enabling organizations to register research data sets and assign digital object identifiers (DOIs) to them. The long-term vision is to help researchers locate, identify, and cite research datasets with confidence.

First (Inaugural) Working Group Meeting. The Working Group was convened for the first time, in Ottawa and sponsored by NRC-CISTI (National Research Council Canada), in a full day meeting during which common interests and strategies were presented and discussed. Lucille Nowell of the (United States) National Science Foundation (NSF) was an invited speaker, and presented the directions being taken by the NSF, which include significant funding opportunities for international, collaborative efforts.

There was unanimous agreement that the issue of research data management in Canada be strongly pursued by this group, who furthermore jointly agreed on the formation of the 4 Task Groups. The Leads for most of these Task Groups were identified at this meeting, prospective new members were suggested, and it was agreed to move forward aggressively and meet again as a group within 6 months.
